The characteristics of pseudo astrologers
as depicted by Neelakantha Deekshita.
Astrology is one among the six branches of the
Veda. It is intended to fix an auspicious time to start a sacrifice to be
performed and completed in time without any obstacles. But in course of time,
it occupied a prominent role in every aspect of human life. As people are very crazy
of knowing the future of their life, exploitation of them also became very
easy. As a result, pseudo astrologers
also attained great prominence. Neelakantha Dikshita, a very great poet of
Sanskrit literature wrote a a satirical treatise Kalivadambinam in which the
ways of pseudo –astrologers are vehemently criticized. He criticized the dark
side of every profession, which causes a severe damage to society. As a part of
it he made fun of pseudo –astrologers.
He openly declares that there is no harm when a
person is not successful in learning. He can become a magician or an astrologer.
यदि न क्वापि विद्यायां सर्वथा क्रमते मति:

When the result predicted by the astrologer is
attained immediately the astrologer can mint money in case it is delayed he can
prescribe many more and earn money.
अविलंबेन संसिद्धौ मान्त्रिकैराप्यते यश:
विलंबे कर्मबाहुल्यं विख्यात्यावाप्यते धनम्

they are happy as they follow his suggestions. In case they are not happy then
also he cay say that they are suffering from problems as they not happy as they
neglected his advice.
