The Vedanta Tradition

                     Unlike other systems, Vedanta system has a very long antiquity. The traditional lineage of Vedanta system is as follows:

Narayana

Brahma (Son of Narayana)

Vasistha (Son of Brahma)

Shakti ( Son of Vasista)

Parasara (Son of Shakti)
I
Vyasa ( Son of Parasara)
I
Goudapaada (Paramaguru of Sankaracharya)

Govindabhagavatpada ( Guru of Sankara )

नारायणं पद्मभुवं वसिष्ठं शक्तिं च तत्पुत्रपराशरं च
व्यासं शुकं गौडपदं महान्तं गोविन्दयोगीन्द्रमथास्य शिष्यम् |
श्रीशंकराचार्यमथास्यपद्मपादं च हस्तामलकं च शिष्यं
तं तोटकं वार्तिककारमन्यदस्मद्गुरून् सन्ततमानतोsस्मि ||
  Lord Narayana taught this knowledge to Brahma ( his son), From Brahman it came  to his son Vasista; from Vasista to his son Shakti; from  Shakti to his son Parasara; from Parasara to his son Vyasa; from  Vyasa to Gaudapada;  From Gaudapada to Govindabhagavatpada; from Govinda to Sankara and from Sankara to his four chief disciples viz., Padmapada , Hastamalaka, Totaka and Sureswara.
