ఆచార్యాత్పాదమాదత్తే

పాదం కాలక్రమేణ చ

విద్యార్థి తన గురువు వలన ఒకటిలో నాలుగో వంతు జ్ఞానాన్ని మాత్రమే పొందగలుగుతున్నాడు. మరో నాలుగో వంతు జ్ఞానం తన బుద్ధి నుపయోగించి అభివృద్ధి చేసుకుంటున్నాడు. ఇంకో నాలుగో వంతు జ్ఞానం సహ విద్యార్థులతో చర్చించి పొందుతున్నాడు. చివరి నాలుగోవంతు జ్ఞానం కాలక్రమంగా అనుభవం వల్ల సంపాదిస్తున్నాడు. కాబట్టి ఏ విద్యార్థి కేవలం ఊపాధ్యాయుని మీదే పూర్తిగా ఆధారపడి ఉండరాదు.

पादं शिष्य: स्वमॆधया |

पादं सब्रह्मचारिभ्य:

पादं कालक्रमेण च ||

A student can receive only one forth of knowledge from his teacher, one forth he understands by exercising his intellect , one forth he learns by discussion with his class' mates and the last one forth gets clarified only in due course of time. (No student is expected to be completely dependent on teachers).
