'Seva' is supreme
Dr. Ch. Durgaprasada Rao
Man is mortal.
There is no doubt about it. But Upanishads declare that man can become immortal
neither by performing yagas, nor by begetting children, nor even by possessing
wealth but by sacrificing his possessions alone in the form of seva.
न कर्मणा न प्रजया धनेन त्यागेनैकेनाsमृतत्त्वमानाशु:
(कठ उपनिषद )
Following the
footsteps of the teaching of the Upanishads, Bhagan Vyasa also states in the
Mahabharata that the golden flowers, produced by Mother Earth are enjoyed by
three persons. One is a warrior; the other one is educated and still the other
one is a person who knows how to serve others.
सुवर्णपुष्पां
पृथिवीं चिन्वन्ति पुरुषास्त्रय:
शूरश्च कृतविद्यश्च यश्च जानाति सेवितुम्
Therefore, seva is
the supreme and comparatively the easiest way to enjoy the olden fruits of this
Mother Earth.
Moreover, seva
done to one’s own guru with reverence is said to be the seva done to the whole
humanity at large as Guru is none other than the embodiment of Universal
Consciousness.
To achieve
immortality, seva should be rendered towards one’s own Guru by way of तन (physically), मन (mentally) and धन (by spending wealth
for the good of the community).
People who are
hale and healthy and physically sound can serve their Guru by services. Persons who are not sound physically can
contribute their seva by prayers and other essential services. People who
cannot afford both but financially sound can serve Guru by spending wealth for
the benefit of the community. Whatever the means it may be, contributing
something for the good of community through guru is said to the supreme dharma
and that alone makes man immortal.
सेवाधर्म: भवति सुगम: योगिनामप्यगम्य: { seva is easier than all the other means and it is
not accessible even for yogis}
