                     Lesson-2 / Unit-1

               अस्ति  x नास्ति 

  अस्ति = Third person singular, present of Be . Is    

 नास्ति  (na+asti = naasti) no /  not any.

(Used to refuse or disagree with something)

 

  पुस्तकम् अस्ति ( there is book )  x  लेखनी नास्ति (There is no pen)      

         दीप: अस्ति =  ( bulb is there   x      विद्युत् नास्ति  (no power )    

      घट: अस्ति ( pot is there  )  x     जलं  नास्ति (no water )       

       कोश: अस्ति ( pocket is there )  x      धनं नास्ति (no money  )   

Construct at least 10 sentences by using these two words asti /naasti

 

Note :-  name the things which you are having and also not  having in your house.

 

Hither to we studied two words asti and naasti . Let us move further.  

                                                Lesson--2/ Unit --2

Now let us know the location of things.  

 

1.  अत्र atra    2. तत्र  tatra   3. कुत्र ? kutra  

4.     एकत्र ektra  5. अन्यत्र anyatra       6. सर्वत्र sarvatra  

 

1.  अत्र=   here .      2. तत्र =  there      

3.कुत्र ?=where?   4 एकत्र =  At one place  

2.  अन्यत्र=  = at another place (elsewhere) 6.सर्वत्र =   every where 

Examples:

·        अत्र पुस्तकम्  अस्ति (atra pustakam asti { book is here )     

·        तत्र वृक्ष: अस्ति (tatra vruksha asti ) tree is there

·        देवालय: कुत्र अस्ति ?(devaalayaha kurta asti?) Where is the temple?

·        ग्रन्थालय: एकत्र अस्ति ( Library is at one place ( some where ) 

·        व्यायामशाला  अन्यत्र अस्ति (vyaayaama shaalaa anyatra asti ) Gymnasium is at another place (elsewhere)

·        पुत्र: एकत्र अस्ति पुत्रिका अन्यत्र अस्ति  (son is at one place (somewhere)  and daughter is at another place (elsewhere) .

·        वायु: सर्वत्र अस्ति   (vaayu: sarvatra asti )= Air is everywhere.

·        देव: सर्वत्र अस्ति (deva: sarvatra asti) God is everywhere.) 

 

Note: You stay somewhere and construct sentences locating all the things you have in and around your houseusing the words    

     अत्र  तत्र,      कुत्र ? एकत्र,  अन्यत्र सर्वत्र  in case if you don’t know the word in samskrit you use substitute it with English word. There is no problem.  

 

                                                                Unit -3

 

1.  वा (is it ?) 2. आम् = yes 3.  =no    किम् ( what ?)

वा is normally used to clarify one’s own doubt.

For example:  

 

स: वैद्य: वा? (Is he a doctor?)   

आम् (yes )  स: वैद्य: (He is a doctor)

सा नर्तकी वा ? (Is she a dancer?)  

 

सा नर्तकी न , सा गायनी = No, she is not a dancer she is a singer)

तत् किम् ? (What is that?)

तत् पुस्तकम् (That is book )

वा आम्    किम्

You please try to make at least ten sentences using the above words.  

Unit -4

अहम् (I am  ) भवान्- you (respectful singular for a male person ) भवती ( respectful singular for a  female person .)

अहम् (I am  )   -    अहं दुर्गाप्रसाद: ( I am Durgaprasad)

अहं अध्यापक: ( I am  a teacher

)

भवान्-  is used  in case the other person is  a male person ( man or a boy )   

भवान् क: )

अहं गायक: I am a singer  

भवती is used in case of a female  person ( a  girl or a woman)  

भवती का ? Who are you? 

अहं अध्यापिका ( I am a teacher )   

 

Let us study a poem of Bhartrihari today.

                     

 द    दानं भोगो= नाश:  

ति        तिस्रो गतयो भवन्ति वित्तस्य

यो   यो न ददाति न भुङ्क्ते

त   तस्य गति: तृतीया भवति ||

    The money or wealth one possesses has three outlets. one is enjoyment, the other is charity and still the other is annihilation. A person who neither enjoys his wealth nor even donates the same to others gets his wealth annihilated or destroyed. Therefore, wealth should either be enjoyed or donated to others.   It should never be kept unused or concealed.

Translate the following sentences into Sanskrit

1.      Temple is here

2.      Book is there.

3.     Where is Washington D.C

4.     My son is at one place and my daughter is at another place.

5.     Pollution is everywhere.

6.     Are you a teacher?

7.     I am not a teacher I am a player.

8.     My brother is somewhere, and my sister is elsewhere.

9.      Cloud is there, no rain.

10.Food is there, no water.
