एक एव खगो मानी
वने वसति चातक:
पिपासितो वा म्रियते
याचते वा पुरन्दरम्
Among the birds that live in forest, the chataka, the pied cuckoo, Cuculus melanoleucus (supposed
to live only on the rain drops, esp. those falling in the autumn asterism
Svati) alone is self -esteemed. It either prefers to die of
thirst or beg Indra, the God of rain for water. A man of self respect even prefers
to die rather than begging an ordinary person.
ఏక ఏవ ఖగో మానీ
వనే వసతి చాతక:
పిపాసితో వా మ్రియతే
యాచతే వా పురందరం
పక్షులన్నిటిలో చాతక పక్షి ఒక్కటే ఆత్మాభిమానం కలది. అది దాహంతో చావడానికైనా
సిద్ధమౌతుంది. లేదా ఇoద్రుణ్ణైనా యాచిస్తుoది. అంతే గాని నీచమైన వ్యక్తిని ఎటువంటి పరిస్థితిలోను
యాచిoచదు.
