Lesson—7/1

 

क्रियापदानां बहुवचनरूपाणि

(plural forms of verbs)

Unlike other languages Sanskrit has dual numbers also in addition to singular and plural. This is a special feature of the language.

For example.

बालक:   (one boy) बालकौ  (two boys) बालका:  many boys (more than two). Verbs are also in three numbers correspondingly.

For example:

(बालक: - पठति one boy is reading  (बालकौ)  पठत: two boys are reading (बालका:) पठन्ति boys (more than two) are reading.   

But in conversational Sanskrit dual number is avoided for the time being for easy access. One can learn the dual forms of nouns and verbs in the course of time. Now, one may question us. when two boys two girls or  are reading how it can be expressed. We can say बालकद्वयं पठति (baalaka dvayaM pathati  बालिका द्वयं पठति and so on.

Let us come to the present.

4.पश्यति (seeing) -      पश्यन्ति 

5.दर्शयति (showing) -  दर्शयन्ति 

6.वदति (speaking) -    वदन्ति 

7. गच्छति (going)   च्छन्ति  

8.पिबति  (drinking)     पिबन्ति 

9.पाययति  (make to drink)    पाययन्ति 

10. नृत्यति    (dancing)       नृत्यन्ति 

11.गायति   (singing)                  गायन्ति 

12.पृच्छति  (asking)                 पृच्छन्ति 

13. नयति   (taking)           नयन्ति 

14.आनयति  (bringing)           आनयन्ति 

15.पोषयति    (feeding )             पोषयन्ति

16. मापयति   (measuring with scale) मापयन्ति

17. तोलयति  (weighing)         तोलयन्ति

18. ज्ञापयति    (reminding)      ज्ञापयन्ति

19. प्रक्षालयति   (cleaning)       प्रक्षालयन्ति

20. करोति       (doing)          कुर्वन्ति 

21. ददाति      (giving)            ददति 

22.पूजयति    (worshipping)      पूजयन्ति 

 

 बालक: पठति (Boy is reading)             बालका:  पठन्ति (Boys are reading)

Try to make sentences using the above verbal forms.

दिनचर्या

Daily routine

 

Mr. Gangadhar is my friend and his son’s daily routine is as follows.

 

n      गङ्गाधरस्य पुत्र: गौतम: (Gautama is the son of Gangadhar)

n      पञ्चवादने---उत्तिष्ठति (gets up at 5oclock )

n      सार्धपञ्चवादनेदन्तधावनं करोति (brushes his teeth at 5.30 )

n      षड्वादने क्षीरं पिबति ( drinks milk at 6oclock)

n      सार्धषड्वादने व्यायामशालां गच्छति   (goes to gymnacium at 6.30)

n      सप्तवादने  स्नानं करोति ( takes bath at 7 o clock)

n      सार्धसप्तवादने पूजां करोति (worships God at 7.30)

n      अष्टवादने अल्पाहारं खादति  ( eats breakfast at 8oclock)

n      नववादने पुस्तकं पठति (reads book at 9oclock)

n      दशवादने पाठशालां गच्छति (goes to school at 10 o clock)

n      पञ्चवादने ग्रन्थालयं गच्छति( goes to library by 5o clock)

n      षड्वादने देवालयं गच्छति (goes to temple at 6 o clock)

n      सप्तवादने गृहम् आगच्छति ( comes home by 7o clock)

n      अष्टवादने पाठ्यपुस्तकानि पठति ( reads class books at 8oclock)

n      दशवादने निद्रां गच्छति (goes to bed by 10 o clock)

 

n      You make 10 sentences by explaining your daily activities.

We are already taught the numbers from 1to 10. Now let us learn numbers from 11 to 50.

द्वितीया विभक्ति:

(Acquisitive case) 

 

Normally in active voice object is in acquisitive case.

Subject-----object-------Verb

 

In active voice the object is in acquisitive case.  

   

बालक:------- पाठं / पाठान् ------  पठति

 

n      बालक: पाठं पठति (Boy is reading a lesson)

पाठं =lesson पाठान् = lessons

n      बालिका परीक्षां / परीक्षा: लिखति (Girl is writing an examination)

परीक्षा=(examination) परीक्षा:=(examinations)

n      राजा कविं /कवीन् संमानयति (king is honoring poet/poets )

n      माता शिशुं / शिशून् पश्यति (Mother is seeing her child/ children)

n      भक्त: देवालयं गच्छति (A devotee is going to temple )

n      बालक: क्षीरं   पिबति ( Boy is drinking milk )

n      अध्यापक: प्रश्नं पृच्छति ( Teacher is asking a question )

n      बालक: पुस्तकं/पुस्तकानि   नयति (Boy is taking book/books)

n      पिता वैद्यं आनयति (Father is bring a doctor )

n      माता पुत्रं प्रेषयति (Mother is sending her son )

कृपया ददातु (Request)

 

  If we add the word कृपया it becomes request. Otherwise, it is order.

n      भवान् कृपया भवत: लेखनीं ददातु (Please give your pen)

n      भवती कृपया मम पुस्तकं आनयतु (Please bring my book )

n      भवान् कृपया मम वचनं शृणोतु (please listen to my word)

n      भवती कृपया पुस्तकं पठतु     ( please read the book )

n      कृपया गच्छतु                      ( please go)

n      कृपया खादतु                            (  Please eat)

n      कृपया पिबतु                             ( Please drink)

 

                    Sanskrit sloka -8           

वने चराम: वसु चाहराम:

नदीस्तराम:  भयं स्मराम:

इतीरयन्तोsपि वने किराता:

मुक्तिं गता: रामपदानुषङ्गात्

 

  Some tribal robbers in a jungle boast of their adventures in the following manner.   वने चराम: We roam in forests. वसु चाहराम:We rob the wealth of others. नदीस्तराम:We cross the rivers.  भयं स्मराम:We don’t think of fear from anybody”. Despite the impolite talks and unlawful behavior of those thieves, they attained salvation as they repeatedly uttered the holy name, ‘Rama’ unknowingly or unknowingly.
